Betty’s Luggage

Betty was fabulous and she knew it, her bubbly personality and intelligence were what attracted Mathew to her. Betty had all these big ideas and plans, and knew what she wanted, at least to an extent.

After their marriage, some years down the line, they were to relocate to another city. Knowing how hectic it could be, Betty got a big bag with different compartments and packed all her things into it before she got into the packing proper. She started with her husband’s things, children’s things, kitchen and then the entire household . Everybody had a question or request, she tried to meet up, but on relocation day, she still had lots of things to do.

Finally, it was time to go and an exhausted Betty sank into the car as the car rolled away to their new life. She must have dozed off because suddenly, she jumped startling her husband who swerved to stop the car from hitting the pavement.

Angrily, he turned “what was that about?” “I think I forgot something.” She replied.

“What did you forget that you want to cause an accident?” Distracted Betty tried to remember what it was she had forgotten.

“Whatever it is, it’s not important. If it were we wouldn’t have forgotten it.” Matthew reasoned as he took his attention back to the road.

Betty tried to relax but the thought kept nagging. Suddenly she snapped her fingers, “my bag! I forgot my bag!” We have to turn back! My bag is still back there.”

“Go back to where? When we are already halfway into the journey? I am sorry we can not do that, we will either find a way to get it to you or get new clothes.” I can not turn back because of only your bag.” Betty begged and cajoled but all her plea met with silence. There were not just clothes but all her ideas and plans, the contacts for actualising them e.t.c were also in the bag.

At that moment she hated her husband, she had worked hard, ensuring all his things were in order and that of the children too, yet it was very easy for him to disregard her need. Suddenly, she shouted at the children whose boisterous play suddenly got on her nerves, “will you shut up and sit down quietly before I give someone a knock?”

When they got to their new house, Betty resentfully arranged everybody’s things and gradually she was able to get new things for herself. Her bag was kept in storage for when she will be able to go for it. It’s been years and she still wonders if her things are still intact, she feels as if she left fabulous Betty behind that day.

She still resents her husband and herself but she has managed to hide it and accept her fate for what it is.

Matthew secretly wondered what happened to his wife because she was no longer the woman he married, to avoid trouble, he kept quiet because she was always ready to flare up at every opportunity. He doesn’t like this new Betty very much but he’s learning to hide his resentment too.

Most of us are Betty, we have left our bags somewhere in the past, carried away by marriage and motherhood for so long that we don’t know who we are anymore… Wondering, wishing and hiding our resentment under activities.
