I don’t have any talent

I was talking to a friend and she said something that reminded me of a misconception we usually make, I was making it too until recently.

My friend had called her friend and during the discussion asked what her plan was since a job was not coming forth yet, the frustrated lady felt pressured by the question because her husband, family members and even friends were all asking her the same thing. According to her she does not know what she’s good at, what she wants to do and was scared to even try in case of failure.

I remember hearing a relative saying the same thing jokingly when I was younger, she said she does not have any talent. I thought so too at a point and this is a common thought pattern amongst many. I have always loved reading and books but what is that compared to all the big and exotic things people did🤷🏼‍♀️… That was my thinking.

The writing wasn’t something I considered a gift, I mean it’s just in my diary/journal. When I was given the best poet in secondary school I felt they didn’t know what they were talking about.

This post is for all those who feel they missed it in the talent department or are scared to start anything in case it fails or are under pressure to do something but don’t know what/how…

First, you are not alone… Countless people feel the same way.

Secondly, relax its nothing new, you have been doing what you’re looking for already… I love reading and journaling my thoughts, so I started sharing some of these thoughts online and with people, this birthed my writing career… See? I have always been doing it. I saw a post about telling our children the right stories; meanwhile, I have been making up stories for my children since their birth, so I decided to compile the stories for them to read whenever they want to, and that’s how the children storybook and Evados children centre was born. For the children centre, I wanted to include the children in the neighbourhood to what I was already teaching my children at home(it won’t make sense if you only work on your child when they will still mingle with other children outside who are carrying different positive/negative ideologies)

At a point in my life when I needed more as a person rather than just coasting through life, I went to meet several women who have gone ahead of me to learn from them and pick their brains, my interview with them was what I compiled into a book for myself that ended up being a book, “where are you? A woman’s guide to finding self, a book that has helped and is still helping lots of people.

Finally, if you are scared of getting it wrong or failing… your fear may be valid but mistakes help you know what to fix. I remember Mrs Olagbegi in her interview for my book said she started with selling underwear to second-hand clothes, to a nail salon, provisions store, to throw pillows and now she owns one of the best interior design school and one of the most sought after interior designer (that’s minus her jewellery line and clothing line for plus size women). No rule says you have to get it right the first time or always get it right.

Mrs Onigbanjo was researching for food she could feed her son who refused to eat, from this she started teaching other women who wanted their children to eat well too, what she learned and now she is making the award-winning August secret baby food. One step will open the door to another door if it’s the wrong room you will check another door and ask questions… the only thing you are sure of is now. Ask questions where you can, try where you can but by all means don’t limit yourself or allow your fears or excuses win… There’s always a little way of starting something big. Don’t be overwhelmed by all the “big” things you see people doing, they started with what they knew and grew from there.

You want to know more, read/learn from the stories of women who started with what they know or almost nothing or even help someone struggling with this… you can get a copy of my book, from Hmedix Abuja (Asokoro, Maitama, Gwarimpa)
