Listening and Waiting
“Aunty Amanda something happened in school yesterday! Should I tell you about it?”
Peju asked her aunt who was engrossed with something on her phone. She looked up and dropped her phone, patting the space on the bed beside her she said. “Of course my darling! Anything for my favourite niece!”
“Aunty Amanda I am your only niece.” Peju rolled her eyes, smiling at the statement.
“Well… Yes, but it’s still true. So what’s up? Tell me everything.” Aunty Amanda was always ready to listen.
“So you know we just finished our examination and we have not been doing anything serious in school?” Peju checked and her aunty was listening and nodding.
I went to meet Mr Adebayo, my class teacher and asked him if he could tell us a story or something because my friend and I were bored. He told me to wait a while and he will teach us a game he played with his friends as a little boy called, ‘save the toe’ Peju paused when she heard Aunty Amanda’s phone ringing.
“Ehen…What happened?” Aunty Amanda waved off the phone.
Peju continued her story, “I was so excited that I could not wait for him, I went to meet my classmates and told them about it. They all wanted to play the game too, I told them it had something to do with toes so we started trying to come up with games that had to do with toes but none made sense till we got tired and gave up.”
“What did your teacher too?” Aunty Amanda asked laughing at the story.
We had to wait for him to finish, then he showed us the game. Do you know it was so simple and interesting unlike what we were doing instead of waiting. Next time I will wait to get all the information, instead of running off because of excitement and impatience. ” Peju shook her head as she remembered the incident.
I am glad you learned something from it, it’s the same thing with the Holy Spirit, when He gives us an idea, He wants to do it with us but most times we run ahead of Him and mess things up. He knows everything about us just like Mr Adebayo knew everything about the game, even though you went ahead to guess, it was simpler and more interesting when he came to show you. Waiting is hard but it’s the best way to go. Don’t you think so?”
“Yes, Mummy said so. Now can we go outside? So I can show you the game, you will love it!” Peju pulled her aunty from the bed and dragged her laughing out of the room.
