Spare the rod…what rod?

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go and
when he’s old, he will not depart from it.
How do we foster independence in our children, helping them become confident adults? What’s wrong with kids doing house chores and picking up after themselves? Instead of parents or house helps doing everything for them because we want to save time, “help” them or we don’t want to trouble them.

What’s wrong with holiday jobs or skill learning in place of holiday lessons? Do they really need that holiday lessons? Why is a child working considered suffering or degrading for the parents (as if you are poor or begging).

Proverbs 13:24-“Spare the rod and spoil the child” the rod in this case can mean hard work;when we try to spare our children from work and “stress” because we feel we work hard enough for them to relax and enjoy…Isn’t that what contributes to an entitled generation? That feels the world owes them…
Taking and taking without putting anything constructive back in return.

My colleague told me yesterday that before he got this current job, he worked as a waiter in a restaurant, his friend got the job also but rejected it because it was demeaning. According to him, he was able to buy a motorcycle from what he saved on the job. he has a better job now but that friend is still searching for the “job” and asking for handouts.
You hear parents say, “I don’t want my children to suffer, the way I suffered. ” but are we not preparing them for that suffering by shielding them from life?
How have you and do we cultivate independence, nurture talent, encourage hard work and reduce dependency in our children and children in our care…raising a generation that
can raise a generation we can be proud of…?

What rod have you been sparing?

xoxo

  • Great thoughts here. You made me see this scripture from a different angle. Great write-up
