Talking with Mariam
There once lived a girl called Mariam, she was nine years old and has two sisters and a baby brother. They lived in Vom in Plateau State.
Mariam is from a Christian family, and she had always heard different Bible stories in the Church and at home. She says her prayers every day because mummy and daddy said she should. But she was still scared and didn’t know if God was powerful enough to defeat the devil who everyone said did all the bad things.
“Mummy is God powerful?” Mariam always asked.
“Yes,” her Mummy replied telling her everything God could do.
“But why can’t we see him?” She asked again.
“Mariam God is in each one of us. We are representing God on earth.” Mummy replied.
Can you see the air? Mariam shook her head. “Do you believe there is air?”
“Yes.” Mariam nodded.
Then just the way you cannot see air but you use air, that’s the way you cannot see God but He lives in us.
“Mummy, what is representing?”
“It means to show a picture or likeness of someone like we are the picture of God on earth. It can also mean to be a sign or symbol of something, that means you and I and everyone are the sign to show there is God,” Mummy answered. You may not understand everything right now but as you grow you will know more. But you can ask God to help you know Him. Is that okay?”
“Yes Mummy,” Mariam sighed as she left.
When it was time for bed, Mariam decided to do what Mummy had said. Hiding her face in her pillow, she said, “God, Mummy said I can talk to you and ask you to help me know you. Is it true that I am a sign that you are real? I am always scared because I think the devil is stronger than you. But I don’t want to be scared anymore. I want to be able to stand up and go to the restroom myself at night, and I don’t want to wee on the bed anymore. Can you help me In Jesus name? Amen.
Mariam was thinking about her prayer when she slept off.
Later that night, Mariam heard someone tapping and calling her,
“Mariam stand up and go to the restroom.”
“I don’t want to.” She complained. Do you want to wee on the bed again?” Mariam did not want that, so she stood up and went to ease herself.”
The next morning, she ran to her parent’s room. “Mummy I didn’t wee on the bed because you woke me to wee in the night!”
She was so excited.
What are you talking about? I didn’t wake you up.”
“Oh… Maybe it’s daddy?” Mariam was sure someone woke her up, but everyone denied waking her up.
The next night, the same thing happened. This time Mariam remembered her prayer to God, She said, “God that was you! you woke me up! Thank you!” she realised God is real and had answered her prayers.
That was how Mariam stopped bedwetting and she knew that God was always watching and was with her and she never let fear stop her again. Since that day, Mariam talks to God always and she hears God talk to her also.
Do you think God is always watching?
Will you want to talk to God like Mariam today? He wants to hear from you too.
