Who are you?#Identity
“It’s an old trick that will keep coming up, today, tomorrow and forever. The answer is in the problem, so who are you?” Grandma asked Tunji and Rita.
The twins,Tunji and Rita are spending the holiday with their grandparents and they were beyond excited! Grandma and Grandpa were part of their favourite people plus they had lots and lots of fun playing with their friends, climbing trees, eating grandma’s delicacies and other interesting stuffs they got up to.
The holiday has been great so far, but grandma kept noticing Rita frequently coming in angry and sulking at a corner by herself while Tunji was getting into fights and sometimes storming back home in anger. She waited for them to tell her the issue but none of them said anything, so she decided to find out herself. This was easy because the compound was lined with beautiful flowers and fruit trees which attracted children from all over the neighborhood, so that was where Tunji and Rita played with their friends.
Grandma took her chores to the room closest to their play area and listened. She didn’t have to wait long.
“Smallie Rita,” one of the children called and everyone except Rita started laughing.
“I have told you to stop calling me smallie.” Rita warned angrily.
“Or what?” The child taunted
“She wants you to call her, big head Rita” one of the girl said.
“No, it’s olodo Rita” another shouted as they laughed and Rita stormed off in anger.
“Is she going to cry or going to report to Grandma… Baby baby, reporter, newscaster.” They chanted as she ran off. Tunji was laughing with them. Grandma waited but she didn’t come to her.
Moments later Grandma heard a scuffle, Tunji was fighting with some of the boys, one of them had dared him to climb the highest branch but they all began to mock him as he accepted their dare and climbed.
“Fatty, you are too slow.”
“Noodles and ice cream has taken over your body.”
“See the way he is running like a girl, can’t even climb the tree properly”
Tunji lashed out in anger and a fight ensued. Grandma from her seat at the window called out, “what is going on there?”
“Nothing ma.” They chorused.
“Or do you want to tell “grandmeme”… you are a big baby wenwen?” The most vocal one among them whispered as they all covered their mouth to muffle their laughter.
At bed time, Grandma came to wish them good night. Before she left she said.
“There’s an old trick that has been and will keep on being used on people, they keep falling for it over and over because they do not know the answer and they do not bother to find out. Children do you want to know what it is?”
“Yes, ma!” Their interest was quipped.
She sat on their bed. The devil used it first on Eve, he told her, if you eat it, you will be like God, he used it on so many people like Moses, he grew up hearing people laugh at him and tell him he could not talk well cos he stammers, so when God sent him, that was his first reply, i dont know how to talk, Joseph with his brothers and even Jesus during the temptation, if you are really the son of God, turn the stone to bread, throw yourself down let’s see if angels will catch you to prove you are the son of God”
It’s the same thing when people insult you, dare you to do things, laugh at you or mock you. These are the same thing, you will get angry, refuse to forgive, cry e.t.c why? Because you don’t know who you are, so the trick works all the time and just like Eve you keep falling and eating the apple always.
Jesus did not have to prove he was the son of God, why? He knew He is and refused to fall.”It’s an old trick that will keep coming up, today, tomorrow and forever. The answer is in the problem, so who are you?” Grandma asked Tunji and Rita.
You are the child of God, the King of All, worthy and enough for Jesus to come and die for… No insult, gossip, mockery, mistake, failure e.t.c should make you doubt, try to prove or forget that! Remember the trick when next you want to cry, stay angry, practise unforgiveness or let the hurt in.”
It’s been years since their grandma told them this trick and though its been hard because almost everyone tries to make them fall for the trick without knowing but Rita and Tunji are determined not to keep eating the apple or turn their bread to stone.
So…who are you?
